A Week of Honours and Nostalgia: Presenting My Memoir in Batangas

The past week has been a whirlwind of emotions and significant moments as I had the honour of presenting my book, Batangas: My Sky and Earth, to two distinguished leaders in Batangas. These encounters were not just a celebration of my literary journey but also a nostalgic walk down memory lane, filled with pride, joy, and deep gratitude.

Meeting the Governor: A Moment of Pride

Event Date: Sunday, January 21, 2024
Location: Dreamzone, Provincial Capitol of Batangas, Batangas City

As my sister and I walked up to the private entrance of the Governor’s office at the Provincial Capitol, I was instantly transported back in time. On the ground floor was Tatay’s old office at the Bureau of Commerce, where he used to take me as a child. Across the street, Tatay would park his Buick, and my sister and I would wait for hours as he wrapped up his day at the office. Upstairs from his old office is now the Governor’s office.

The air of anticipation grew thicker as we were instructed to walk to the nearby Dreamzone building and wait until the flag-raising ceremony concluded. The Honourable Hermilando Mandanas, the 21st Governor of Batangas, was scheduled to meet and greet me there. As the ceremony ended, the Governor approached, his presence both commanding and approachable.

With my sister, Josie, and Abel Bejasa, the Chief of Staff, by my side, I handed over the paperback edition of my book to Governor Mandanas. To Abel, whose support has been invaluable, I presented another paperback. Those fifteen minutes were a maelstrom of emotions—pride, joy, and an overwhelming sense of achievement. Respecting the Governor’s limited time, I delivered my 60-second elevator pitch about my childhood memoir, focusing on the essence of Batangas: My Sky and Earth. He said he would read it. His genuine interest and the introduction to his morning audience in the intimate, air-conditioned waiting area made the experience even more memorable. We captured this cherished moment with photographs that will forever remind me of this special day.

Reconnecting with the Mayor: A Nostalgic Reunion

Event Date: Wednesday, January 24, 2024
Location: Sampaguita Farm, Sampaga, Batangas City

Just a few days later, I found myself at the picturesque Sampaguita Farm, ready to present my book to the city mayor, The Honourable Beverly Dimacuha. This meeting was more than just a formal presentation; it was a heartfelt reunion with a childhood friend. Mayor Dimacuha and I reminisced about our shared past, revering Tito Eddie’s presence in the book and his final resting place at the compound, and laughing about the charmed lives we’ve led apart and a few contemporaries in between—tales of Romeo and Juliet.

During our conversation, I mentioned the earlier privilege of receiving the Certificate of Recognition from the Sangguniang Panlungsod Ng Batangas, which included a moving introduction by her brother, Dondon Dimacuha. To my delight, Dondon was also present and came over to say hi, almost unrecognizable with his motorcycle helmet on. Mayor Dimacuha’s husband, Congressman Marvey Mariño, joined us, and we engaged in a meaningful dialogue about the importance of nurturing reading and writing skills among the youth. Their aide captured these candid moments, freezing in time the joy and camaraderie we shared.

The thirty minutes we spent together felt like a timeless exchange of ideas and memories, a true testament to the enduring bond of friendship and shared vision for our community.

Reflections on a Grateful Heart

As I reflect on these significant events, my heart swells with gratitude. The privilege of presenting my work to such esteemed leaders, reconnecting with a dear friend, and discussing the future of our community’s youth are moments I will cherish forever. These encounters not only validated my efforts as an author but also deepened my connection to the place I call home—Batangas.

To everyone who has supported me on this journey, thank you. And to the leaders who took the time to engage with my work, your encouragement fuels my passion to continue writing and sharing the stories of our beloved Batangas.

With a heart full of gratitude,

Bong Serrano
